Fagus grandifolia
Smooth bark, slow time
American beech wears a skin no other forest tree does — silver-gray, unbroken, cool to the touch for three hundred years. It grows in deep shade where others can't, holds its pale leaves through winter like lanterns, and anchors the hardwood forests of eastern North America. You could recognize one blindfolded.
