THE FOREST FLOOR
The forest you can’t see

A grove is more than its trunks. Fallen leaves feed the soil; threads of fungi lace through the roots, trading minerals for sugar and linking tree to tree. Seedlings rise in the filtered light. What looks like a stand of separate trees is one connected, breathing system — which is exactly what makes a threat to it so dangerous.
